Our Patron

Dr. Christie Akwaowo is a Community Medicine Physician, Lecturer and Researcher, currently serving as the Director for Research in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

She studied Medicine and Surgery in the University of Calabar, Nigeria and Masters in Health Policy, Planning and Financing from the University of London, (London School of Economics and the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). She is also a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

As an advocate of Universal Health Coverage, her research work aims to give evidence to shape policies that improve service delivery and strengthen the Nigerian healthcare delivery system. She has particular interests in repositioning Primary Health Care and ensuring access to health care services for indigent groups through health insurance.

Dr. Akwaowo is passionate about mentoring young people to excel in their chosen careers and fields of endeavour. She strives to inspire and build the capacity of young researchers in the University and the Institute of Health Research and Development. Besides these, she continues to volunteer in her local Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN AKS), where the state branch has gained national and international recognition through  her work in screening for cancers and crowdfunding for cancer.
